Membership

Our mission is to support immigrants and refugees by responding to their needs. We do this through advocacy and through accessible, practical and diverse services that enable them to meet their personal goals while building bridges to the larger community.

MOSAIC came into being with the amalgamation of two separate organizations - the Multilingual Social Service and the Language Aid to Ethnic Groups. In 1972, both had developed in response to the growing awareness of the daily problems faced by non-English speaking residents in the Greater Vancouver area.

In April of 1976, acting on the request of the then Department of Manpower and Immigration, the two organizations were amalgamated into a new society called MOSAIC (Multilingual Orientation Service Association for Immigrant Communities). MOSAIC became an incorporated non-profit society and a registered charity.

A Current Perspective

Today, MOSAIC has blossomed into a $5 million dollar organization with over 120 staff and 250 contractors. Service offered include interpretation, translation, English classes, employment programs, community outreach/development programs, family support programs and bilingual and family counselling.

The goals of MOSAIC remain the same as its founding sisters:

  • To be community base;
  • To have bilingual staff, and
  • To offer services to non-English speaking in Greater Vancouver.

A Policy Board

The Board of MOSAIC is responsible for the overall management of the organization through its role in policy development and program evaluation.

A policy board would restrict its activities to the following:

  • Strategic planning
  • Determination of annual objectives organizational outreach
  • Ensure financial stability
  • Response to significant community issues in the areas of settlement work

Through the Executive Director’s monthly report, the Board of Directors would be informed and appraised of key operational matters and personnel decisions. The Board of Directors would recommend and approve globe policy decisions, and respond to matters in the community that affect the overall operation of the organization.
